Geography Talk by alumna Maria Afonina

Published on 19/12/23

In October St Andrews Geography student (and former Stephen Perse pupil) Maria Afonina visited the sixth form as part of an outreach project.

Maria introduced the students to the topic of glaciology. They then used Google Earth Pro to monitor changes in the extent of Greenland’s glaciers. The remote sensing technology can be used to measure how much ice is lost every year and it was possible to see a recent acceleration in the amount lost -clearly a concern. However, as she explained, the data is important to help warn and prepare ourselves for the future.
